Gee- Maybe we did all that!! EVERY ONE OF MY EXCEL FILES - old/new/local open READ ONLY. Attributes are greyed out so I cannot change them - I save - it makes 'copy of' then I try to open that and cannot edit. As for MS - they can stuff it - this is why I switched to Apple when MS brilliantly dropped XP making both my MS machines obsolete. I will continue with Office 2011. Split from I did all that - since this is 16.14.1 it returns no updates.
Actually not worried about WORD - my Excel load for Office 2016 will not work as follows ( yes it is the recent version): Why can I not open from the RECENT menu a file to edit? Only if I open from the directory can I open a non read only. EVEN if that file is a new one generated in Office 2016.
EVERYTHING opened in FILE/OPEN RECENT opens as read only. If it is an old file generated in 2011 - it has TIMES NEW ROMAN, etc.; Excel sees the font in the old file. But I cannot use TIMES NEW ROMAN and lots of others ( CALIBRA, ETC) if I generate a new file in 2016. Those fonts are not in the font library anymore. Also - No print preview - it’s greyed out on the REVIEW menu on the bar.
No PAGE BREAK view - cannot set page breaks, so I have to format “fit to one page” and do each page as a worksheet. No PASTE after COPY or CUT. It is not saving to the clipboard. If I 'SAVE AS' to change the file destination, it always saves as COPY OF.

ALL files opened from the 2016 drop down 'open recent' load as READ ONLY AND WILL NOT SAVE WITH THE SAME FILE NAME. I save and get COPY OF added - open that one and it is read only. File info in finder shows the file unlocked. The option for read only on the file menu is ALWAYS greyed out. If I open an OLD file from finder it opens editable. Same file from opened from RECENT is read only.
Missing fonts open with old files but are not available with new files or read only old files. I thought I got away from he MS beast in 2013 - now they won't leave Apple users be. I deleted 2011 and it made no difference,so I am using it until something happens.

If you open the document later on, Excel will say that it is broken, in use or weiteprotected. These lockfiles are usually hidden, so you wanna make all files visible by using the terminal command (Google). If you‘re on 10.13, simply open Finder and press Shift + CMD +. (punctuation mark). If you find files that begin with $ you successfully spotted a lockfile. If the file without the prefix is not opened by anyone at the moment, try to delete the lockfile.
